It's a good idea to become familiar with the basic color wheel with primary, secondary and tertiary colors. There are a couple of tricks that can help anyone select colors more effectively. COORDINATE VS. MATCHING Choosing fabrics to coordinate is not the same as matching colors. Usually, the best coordinates are fabrics with less intensity than the focus fabric. The most frequent color mistake that quilters make is judging how fabrics interact with each other from too close a perspective. We typically look at fabric on the bolt at a much closer range than when we view a finished quilt, and this distorts color perception.
