In Gulliver’s Travels (1726) Jonathan Swift used his extensive reading of travel narratives, and the public demand for them, as a vehicle for social and political satire. This depended upon the problematic truth claims of such geographical works, particularly those which were set, as Gulliver was, in the “never-never land” of the South Seas (Williams 1997: 210). Swift has his eponymous narrator signal both to the desire for truth from printed travel narratives and the impossibility of establishing it.

They were, instead, actively implicated in the process of understanding, and thereby of shaping, the emergent social relations and subjectivities of the global market economy. Through these writings, and the responses that they provoked, abstractions like the market, the national economy or the balance of trade between nations came to seem real and to be real.
